Craigellachie Single Malt Scotch Whisky

(0 products)

Craigellachie single malt Scotch whisky is a bold and characterful Speyside malt, often described as “old-fashioned” in style due to its distinctive sulphury, meaty notes and robust mouthfeel. Founded in 1891 by Alexander Edward and Peter Mackie, both prominent figures in Scotch whisky history, the distillery was designed to produce a spirit with weight and personality, setting it apart from the lighter, fruitier Speyside norm. Its name, taken from the Gaelic Creag Eileachaidh, means “rocky hill,” referring to the cliff-top village where the distillery stands overlooking the River Spey.

From its earliest days, Craigellachie has been a favourite among blenders for its ability to add structure, depth, and a slightly smoky edge to a blend. Much of this distinctive profile comes from its production methods, which remain remarkably traditional. The distillery employs long fermentation times and uses oil-fired stills, a rarity in modern Scotch production, which can contribute subtle sulphury notes and a dense, almost waxy texture.

One of Craigellachie’s defining features is its use of worm tub condensers, an old-fashioned cooling system that imparts additional weight and a slightly savoury complexity to the new make spirit. Combined with its deliberate approach to preserving heavier flavour compounds during distillation, this results in a whisky that is rich, muscular, and built for long maturation.

Craigellachie has historically been a key component in blends like Dewar’s White Label, but in recent years it has gained recognition as a single malt in its own right. The official range relaunched in 2014 with age-statement bottlings including the 13 Year Old, 17 Year Old, and 23 Year Old, all of which showcase the distillery’s meaty, tropical fruit-laced character. These whiskies often present aromas of pineapple, baked apple, malt, and burnt sugar, underpinned by that signature savoury depth.

Maturation at Craigellachie typically takes place in a mix of American oak ex-bourbon casks and refill hogsheads, preserving the distillate’s unique profile while allowing slow, steady oak influence. The balance of spirit character and cask maturation means Craigellachie can hold its own at younger ages, while older expressions develop greater complexity without losing their core identity.

Independent bottlers, including Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory Vintage, and Hunter Laing, have released a variety of Craigellachie single casks, from youthful, assertive drams brimming with malt and sulphur to elegant, decades-old bottlings with deep tropical fruit and polished oak.

On the palate, Craigellachie delivers a distinctive combination of sweet malt, stewed fruit, tangy pineapple, and a touch of charred meatiness. The finish is often long and slightly drying, with malt biscuit and oak spice. This robust, individual style means Craigellachie pairs well with rich foods such as roast pork, smoked fish, and aged cheese.

Our Craigellachie Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection includes the acclaimed core range, limited editions, and rare independent bottlings. Whether you’re seeking a whisky with distinctive texture and depth, or you want to explore one of Speyside’s most idiosyncratic distilleries, Craigellachie offers a rewarding journey into a bolder side of the region’s whisky-making tradition.
