Bruichladdich Single Malt Scotch Whisky
(1 products)Bruichladdich single malt Scotch whisky is one of Islay’s most forward-thinking and diverse distilleries, producing everything from elegant, unpeated malts to some of the world’s most heavily peated drams. Founded in 1881 by the Harvey brothers on the shores of Loch Indaal, Bruichladdich was built using a state-of-the-art design for its time, with tall, narrow-necked stills that continue to shape its signature spirit profile.
For much of the 20th century, Bruichladdich focused on a light, floral style of Islay malt, quite different from the island’s more typical heavily peated whiskies. The distillery closed in 1994, but its fortunes changed dramatically when it was purchased and revived in 2000 by a group of private investors led by Mark Reynier, with Jim McEwan, formerly of Bowmore, brought in as master distiller. The revival was built on transparency, terroir, and experimentation, values that remain central to Bruichladdich’s philosophy today.
Bruichladdich now produces three main styles:
• Bruichladdich - unpeated, floral, and barley-driven, often highlighting specific barley varieties or origins, including Scottish mainland and Islay-grown grain.
• Port Charlotte - heavily peated to around 40ppm, offering a smoky Islay style balanced by fruit and coastal freshness.
• Octomore - ultra-heavily peated whiskies, regularly exceeding 150ppm and sometimes over 300ppm, yet often surprising drinkers with their balance and drinkability.
The distillery is a strong advocate for the concept of provenance in whisky-making. Many releases focus on single-vintage production, specific farms, or particular barley strains, emphasising how raw materials influence flavour. Bruichladdich also champions full transparency, often detailing cask types, barley sources, and production data on their bottles and website.
Maturation takes place exclusively on Islay, an unusual practice for a modern distillery, with casks stored in traditional dunnage and racked warehouses. This ensures the whisky absorbs the island’s maritime character, subtle salinity and briny freshness, regardless of peat level. Bruichladdich experiments with a wide variety of cask types beyond traditional bourbon and sherry, including wine barrels from France, Italy, and Spain, as well as rum, port, and fortified wine casks.
The core range reflects this diversity: the Classic Laddie offers a signature unpeated style, while Port Charlotte’s 10 Year Old is a benchmark for balanced peat. Octomore is released in annual numbered series, each batch exploring different combinations of peat level, age, and cask influence. Limited editions and single cask releases provide even deeper dives into the distillery’s experimental ethos.
Bruichladdich is also recognised for its environmental commitments. It has invested in sustainable energy, community engagement, and reducing packaging impact, positioning itself as a modern whisky-maker rooted in Islay’s traditions but looking firmly to the future.
Our Bruichladdich Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection includes everything from delicate unpeated expressions to the world’s most heavily peated releases. Whether you’re drawn to the elegance of The Classic Laddie, the smoky depth of Port Charlotte, or the boundary-pushing intensity of Octomore, Bruichladdich offers a unique opportunity to explore the breadth of Islay whisky in one distillery.
