Michter's Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash 2023 Release 45.6% ABV
A warming, expressive, rye-forward whiskey made in honour of John Shenk, the founder of the distillery that would go on to become Michter’s. It’s a celebration of his life’s work – if, back in 1753, he hadn’t turned to distilling, American whiskey would look very different. Matured in both charred American oak and toasted French oak casks, it’s a full-bodied, bold release with an array of fruity and sweet pastry notes. ‘Sour mash’ refers to the practice of adding residue from the base of the still (‘backset’) in with the fermenting mash of the next production run.
Tasting note:
Nose: Very rich, with toffee, whole vanilla pods, croissants, raisins, icing sugar, coconut and baking spices.
Palate: Rich, round and mouth-coating, the palate brings in more spice notes, Danish pastries, honey, dried apricot and a touch of herbaceousness.
Finish: Long with more baking spices.
