The first expression in a fascinating collection from single malt distillery Glen Scotia, this is Icons of Campbeltown Release No. 1: The Mermaid. Taking inspiration from community storytelling meeting point Market Cross, the collectable range brings the saints and beasts from local lore to life. The distillery has partnered with Joel Holtzman (who has worked with Lucasfilm, Marvel, Disney and Macmillan) to illustrate the tales. First up is this Palo Cortado-finished, unpeated bottling. Overflowing with saline notes, it had to be paired with The Mermaid. We’re enchanted.
Tasting note from Glen Scotia:
Nose: Rich, mellow and slightly drying. Maritime salt crystals, boat varnish, edible seaweed. Thick fruity tarte tatin, Dundee Seville marmalade and tablet toffee.
Palate: A creamy texture, lightly sweet centre palate glazed with French apple tart and a pinch of salt.
Finish: Long and warming with a savoury aftertaste and spicy finish.
