Tullamore D.E.W. is one of Ireland’s best-known and most widely enjoyed whiskeys, celebrated for its smooth, gentle character and triple-distilled blend of malt, grain, and pot still whiskeys. Founded in 1829 in the town of Tullamore, County Offaly, the brand has a history intertwined with the growth, decline, and remarkable revival of the Irish whiskey industry.

The name “D.E.W.” honours Daniel E. Williams, a young stable boy who joined the distillery in the late 19th century and worked his way up to become its general manager and later owner. Williams modernised the distillery, introduced electricity, and left a lasting mark on the brand. His personal motto, “Give every man his D.E.W.”, became a play on both his initials and the smooth, approachable style of the whiskey itself.

Like many Irish distilleries, Tullamore faced hard times in the mid-20th century as Prohibition in the United States, economic isolation, and competition from Scotch whisky took their toll. The original distillery closed in 1954, and production moved to other facilities. In 2014, however, a new Tullamore distillery opened just outside the town, bringing whiskey-making back to its historic home for the first time in 60 years.

Each component is triple-distilled, the hallmark of Irish whiskey, which contributes to its exceptionally smooth character. Maturation takes place in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels (for vanilla, honey, and wood spice) and ex-sherry casks (for dried fruit richness and nuttiness).

In terms of flavour, Tullamore D.E.W. is known for its balanced, mellow profile. Expect aromas of green apple, citrus, and soft spice on the nose, with a palate of vanilla, toasted wood, and gentle nutty sweetness. The finish is smooth and warming, with lingering malt and spice notes.
