(0 produkte)In the ever-evolving world of whisky, one name stands out for its irreverent charm, artistic flair, and unrelenting commitment to quality: That Boutique-y Whisky Company. Founded in 2012, this independent bottler has carved out a distinctive place within the global whisky scene by sourcing unique, often rare spirits from around the world and presenting them in unmistakable fashion – each bottle adorned with a hand-drawn label that tells its own curious tale.
A brief history
That Boutique-y Whisky Company was the brainchild of Ben Ellefsen and his friends, inspired by the success of illustrated whisky labels showcased at Maltstock in 2012. From the outset, the brand positioned itself for those who appreciate fine whisky but aren't bogged down by the formality that often surrounds it. Gone were the lab coats and lecture notes – in came comic-book style storytelling, creativity, and liquid excellence.
By 2022, the company had celebrated its tenth anniversary and had firmly established itself as a respected name in the whisky world. Recognition followed suit, including the prestigious Spirits Bottler of the Year 2023 award from The Spirits Business.
The boutique-y approach to whisky
As an independent bottler, That Boutique-y Whisky Company doesn’t distil its own spirit. Instead, it seeks out casks from existing distilleries – both well-known and those that fly under the radar from Scotland and across the globe. The whisky they bottle is often unusual or off-style for the distillery of origin. These are expressions that might not find their way into the official portfolio – sometimes too quirky, sometimes just too limited.
Whether it’s a distillate from a long-lost Scotch grain distillery or a bold American rye, each whisky earns its place in the bottle through one simple criterion: it has to be delicious.
Production and character
Though the company doesn't oversee distillation, its expertise lies in cask selection and maturation. Each cask is chosen for its individual character – whether a once-in-a-lifetime single malt or a small-batch blend. Their whiskies are often bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered, and with minimal intervention, allowing the original spirit to shine.
And then there’s the label. Every Boutique-y bottle features a hand-drawn illustration, often whimsical, sometimes cryptic, but always telling a story. Created by illustrator Emily Chappell, the artwork ranges from subtle nods to the distillery’s heritage to full-blown graphic narratives that reflect the whisky’s personality. Even unnamed or undisclosed distilleries come with a clue-laden label for the curious to decipher.
What sets boutique-y apart?
Several things make a Boutique-y whisky distinct. Small-batch exclusivity is at the heart of what they do. Each expression is typically limited, making it both collectible and fleeting.
While the brand has bottled whisky from 79 of Scotland’s 95 single malt distilleries and six of the seven operational grain distilleries, its portfolio extends well beyond Scotch. You’ll find whiskies from Japan, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Israel, the US, and many other countries.
The company has also secured stock from iconic closed Scottish distilleries including Old Port Ellen, Rosebank, and Littlemill.
Alongside its single distillery expressions, Boutique-y bottles a range of creative blends – including blended malts and grains – crafted with the same attention to flavour and storytelling.
Product range and highlights
The range from That Boutique-y Whisky Company is dynamic and ever-changing. Instead of a core line-up, bottlings are grouped into batches, each marked by individuality and limited availability. These include single malts from renowned distilleries like Macallan, Ardbeg, and Port Charlotte; single grains from producers such as North British and Auchroisk; and a wealth of international expressions from Australia, Switzerland, Israel, Taiwan, and beyond.
Blended whiskies form another important part of the portfolio, offering flavour complexity drawn from multiple origins and styles.
Flavour profiles vary depending on origin and cask type, but expect everything from soft orchard fruits and heather honey to rich peat smoke and bold spice. It’s a journey across the whisky spectrum in every batch.
A global perspective with a personal touch
That Boutique-y Whisky Company has shown that independent bottling can be both seriously good and seriously fun. Whether you’re sipping on a rare closed-distillery Scotch or exploring a boundary-pushing blend from a young distillery in Australia, you’re tasting something truly unique. And perhaps, while admiring the label’s artwork, learning a story or two along the way.
So, what makes a whisky truly Boutique-y? It’s not just the age, the origin, or even the rarity – it’s the idea that whisky should be enjoyed, explored, and maybe not taken too seriously, so long as it’s seriously delicious.
