Sazerac
(0 Produkte)Sazerac is both the name of one of America’s most historic cocktails and a renowned family of spirits, anchored by Sazerac Rye Whiskey — a straight rye that embodies the rich heritage of New Orleans and the early days of American whiskey-making. Produced by the Sazerac Company, headquartered in New Orleans but distilled in Kentucky at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, Sazerac Rye has become a benchmark for classic rye flavour and cocktail versatility.
The story of Sazerac begins in the mid-19th century at the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans, a popular gathering place where the Sazerac cocktail, now recognised as the official cocktail of the city, was first served. Originally made with Cognac and later rye whiskey, sugar, Peychaud’s bitters, and an absinthe rinse, the drink’s enduring fame helped cement the Sazerac name in spirits history.
Today’s Sazerac Rye Whiskey draws inspiration from those early New Orleans recipes. It is crafted from a rye-heavy mash bill, giving it the spicy backbone that defines the style, and matured for around six years in new, charred American oak barrels. Ageing takes place in Kentucky’s climate, where hot summers and cold winters drive the whiskey deep into the oak, extracting rich colour and complex flavours.
The flavour profile of Sazerac Rye is both robust and refined. On the nose, it typically offers aromas of clove, vanilla, anise, and citrus peel. The palate is lively and full-bodied, with a balance of rye spice, caramel, and subtle herbal notes. The finish is long, warm, and slightly peppery, making it equally enjoyable neat, with water, or in cocktails.
Sazerac Rye is a staple for making classic whiskey cocktails, particularly the Sazerac itself, as well as Manhattans and Old Fashioneds. Its bold spice cuts through sweetness, while its smoothness ensures balance. Bartenders prize it for its reliability, distinctive flavour, and historical authenticity.
Beyond its flagship rye, the Sazerac name also appears on other premium American whiskeys, including older and limited-edition rye expressions like the 18-Year-Old Sazerac Rye from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, which is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. These rare releases showcase what extended ageing can do for rye, with layers of tobacco, leather, dark chocolate, and rich spice.
The Sazerac Company, which owns the brand, is one of the largest privately held spirits companies in the world. Its portfolio includes not only American whiskeys but also global icons in rum, tequila, gin, and liqueurs. However, Sazerac Rye remains one of its most recognisable and respected names, bridging the gap between cocktail history and modern premium whiskey production.
Our Sazerac selection includes the classic 6-Year-Old Straight Rye, perfect for both sipping and mixing, as well as rare and collectible older editions when available. Whether you’re recreating a piece of New Orleans cocktail history or simply looking for a bold, versatile rye whiskey, Sazerac delivers a timeless combination of spice, heritage, and craftsmanship in every glass.
