Tamnavulin Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Tamnavulin is a modern Speyside distillery known for producing approachable, fruit-forward single malts with a smooth, easy-drinking style. Situated in the village of Tomnavoulin in the Livet Glen, the distillery was established in 1966 to meet the high demand for malt whisky in blends during the post-war whisky boom. While it spent much of its early history supplying spirit for blended Scotch, Tamnavulin has, in recent years, emerged as a brand in its own right, offering a growing range of affordable and accessible single malt bottlings.

The name “Tamnavulin” translates from Gaelic as mill on the hill, a nod to the old woollen mill that once stood nearby. Its location in the heart of Speyside places it among some of Scotland’s most renowned distilleries, benefiting from the region’s clean spring water, temperate climate, and long-standing whisky-making traditions.

Tamnavulin was mothballed in 1995 during a period of industry oversupply, but it was revived in 2007 after being acquired by Whyte & Mackay, the Glasgow-based drinks company that also owns Jura and Dalmore. Since its reopening, Tamnavulin has invested in modern equipment while maintaining traditional copper pot still distillation to produce a light, fruity spirit.

The flagship Tamnavulin Double Cask is matured in American oak before being finished in sherry casks, delivering flavours of apple pie, toffee, and subtle cinnamon. Other notable expressions include the Sherry Cask Edition, Red Wine Cask Editions (often featuring French, Spanish, or Italian wine casks), and travel retail exclusives that explore alternative finishes.

In flavour terms, Tamnavulin whiskies are typically soft, rounded, and fruit-led, making them ideal for newcomers to single malt whisky as well as those seeking an easy-drinking Speyside dram. Expect aromas of orchard fruit, vanilla, and honey; a palate of apple, pear, caramel, and gentle spice; and a smooth, medium-length finish.
