Glenrothes 25 Year Old 1997 PX Finish Wilson & Morgan 54.8% ABV

A beautifully aged Glenrothes expression, finished for 18 months in a second-fill Pedro Ximénez and bottled by Wilson & Morgan. It’s a classic old Speysider, full of orchard fruit aromas but also an interesting smattering of rancio notes too. A real treat of a single malt.

Tasting note:

Nose: A sophisticated fruit basket, with peaches, fresh orange, green apples and strawberries, wrapped up in old library books and earthy liquorice.

Palate: More nuttiness comes through on the palate, with almond pastries, coffee beans and incense alongside the fruit.

Finish: Long, with more incense spice and marzipan.

About Glenrothes

The Glenrothes single malt Scotch whisky is a Speyside distillery known for its rich, balanced spirit and distinctive approach to maturation. Founded in 1878 in the town of Rothes, Moray, the distillery quickly established a reputation for producing a whisky prized by blenders for its complexity and reliability. It remains a key component in blends such as Cutty Sark and The Famous Grouse, but in recent decades The Glenrothes has also built a strong identity as a single malt brand in its own right.

From the beginning, The Glenrothes has been associated with quality cask management. The distillery uses a notably slow distillation process in tall copper pot stills, producing a spirit that is light yet full-flavoured, with a balance of fruit, spice, and malt sweetness. Fermentation takes place over a relatively long period, developing a depth of fruity esters that form the backbone of the whisky’s style.

Water for production comes from the Ardcanny and Brauchhill springs in the hills above Rothes, known for their purity and mineral content. The distillery’s commitment to careful maturation is evident in its extensive use of first-fill sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez, Spain. While American oak ex-bourbon casks are also used to bring brightness and vanilla notes, the sherry casks, both oloroso and Pedro Ximénez, add richness, dried fruit, and spice that are hallmarks of The Glenrothes flavour profile.

Unlike many distilleries that release whiskies by age statement alone, The Glenrothes has a tradition of vintage bottlings, releasing whiskies from specific years when the spirit and cask combination reach peak maturity. This approach, borrowed from the wine world, emphasises quality and character over uniformity, and it has earned The Glenrothes a loyal following among collectors and enthusiasts.

The current Soleo Collection, named after the sun-drying process for sherry grapes, has reintroduced age statements, ranging from the bright and fruity 10 Year Old to the deeper, more complex 18 and 25 Year Olds. The range also includes non-age-statement releases designed to showcase the house style at different points in its maturation curve.

Independent bottlings of Glenrothes, often released under the “Speyside” or “Rothes” designation due to branding agreements, offer further opportunities to explore the spirit in different cask types, including bourbon, wine, and refill sherry. These can highlight either the clean, citrusy side of the distillery or its richer, more indulgent character.

In terms of flavour, The Glenrothes typically offers aromas of orange zest, vanilla, and nutmeg, alongside honey and dried fruit from the sherry casks. The palate balances sweet malt, sultanas, baking spice, and roasted nuts, with a long, warming finish. This combination of freshness and richness makes it a versatile whisky for sipping neat, pairing with desserts, or enjoying alongside cheese and charcuterie.

Our Glenrothes Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection includes the elegant Soleo Collection, rare vintage bottlings, and limited single casks. Whether you’re looking for a refined Speyside dram for everyday enjoyment or a collectible release that captures a specific moment in time, The Glenrothes offers a whisky with both history and depth of character.
