Distilled in 1948 and bottled in 2013 by Gordon & MacPhail, this remarkable Glen Grant represents over six decades of careful maturation and stands among the most venerable Speyside single malts ever released.
Laid down in the immediate post-war period, the spirit captures a style of whisky-making that has long since passed into history. Patiently matured in oak under Gordon & MacPhail’s stewardship, it showcases the house’s unparalleled ability to preserve balance and elegance across extraordinary timescales. Bottled at 40% ABV, the whisky retains Glen Grant’s signature delicacy while delivering profound complexity and poise.
The nose is refined and evocative, opening with antique oak, dried fruits, beeswax and gentle notes of old library books and soft tobacco. On the palate, layers of stewed pear, sultana, orange peel and subtle spice unfold gradually, supported by polished wood and a silky, almost ethereal mouthfeel. The finish is long, graceful and quietly persistent, leaving impressions of sweet malt, gentle dryness and lingering oak.
This is a whisky defined by restraint, patience and heritage rather than intensity, a contemplative dram that rewards slow appreciation and thoughtful reflection.
An exceptional collector’s bottling, the Glen Grant 1948 is not only a rare and beautiful whisky, but a living fragment of Scotch whisky history, preserved with extraordinary care by Gordon & MacPhail.
Nose: Rich and honeyed with a little hint of ripe figs, a more rounded waxy aroma arrives with hints of almonds and sweet oak, dark fruits and a little spice and warming leather aromas.
Palate: With a rich and complex nose the palate is all that and more, with a nice balance on the front of damson's and blackberry compote, a rich and fruity mid palate opens up with sweet citrus, milk chocolate and soft strawberry and cream notes, leaf tobacco and sweet spices.

About Glen Grant
Glen Grant single malt Scotch whisky is one of Speyside’s most enduring names, known for its bright, fresh, and approachable style. Founded in 1840 in Rothes, Moray, by brothers John and James Grant, the distillery has been a pioneer in both production and presentation, building a global reputation that today makes Glen Grant one of the best-selling single malts in markets such as Italy and South Africa.
From its earliest years, Glen Grant stood out for its innovative approach. James Grant, nicknamed “The Major,” who took over in the late 19th century, was a forward-thinking distiller and businessman. He introduced tall, slender pot stills with purifiers, copper attachments on the lyne arms that recycle heavier vapours back into the still, producing a lighter, cleaner spirit. This design, combined with the use of unpeated malt, helped define Glen Grant’s signature style: crisp, floral, and fruit-driven.
The distillery’s water comes from the Caperdonich Well, and fermentation is relatively long, encouraging the development of delicate esters that carry through into the new make spirit. Distillation is conducted with precision to maintain the trademark lightness, and maturation traditionally takes place in a mix of American oak ex-bourbon barrels, which enhance the natural orchard fruit sweetness, and sherry casks, which add gentle depth and spice.
Glen Grant’s core range is anchored by approachable, age-statement whiskies:
• Glen Grant 10 Year Old — fresh apple, pear, vanilla, and a hint of almond, with a clean, crisp finish.
• Glen Grant 12 Year Old — richer and more rounded, with honey, toffee, and soft spice.
• Glen Grant 15 Year Old — non-chill-filtered, with orchard fruit layered over baking spice and malt sweetness.
• Glen Grant 18 Year Old — complex and refined, with tropical fruit, nuts, and elegant oak.
At the upper end, Glen Grant produces older age statements, 21, 25, and even 50 years old, which reveal remarkable complexity while retaining the distillery’s hallmark brightness. These long-matured expressions are prized for their balance of fruit, oak, and subtle spice, a testament to the quality of both the spirit and the cask management.
Independent bottlings of Glen Grant, particularly from the 1960s and 1970s, have a cult following among whisky collectors. Many of these older casks display extraordinary tropical fruit notes, mango, papaya, and guava, alongside waxy texture and delicate spice, placing them among the most celebrated vintage Speyside malts.
In terms of flavour, Glen Grant is typically light to medium-bodied, with aromas of fresh-cut apple, pear, and spring flowers. The palate is smooth and slightly creamy, with sweet malt, vanilla, and a refreshing herbal lift. The finish is clean and crisp, making it a superb aperitif whisky and a versatile choice for a range of occasions.
Our Glen Grant Single Malt Scotch Whisky selection covers the fresh and elegant core range, rare older vintages, and limited editions that showcase the distillery’s enduring appeal. Whether you’re looking for an everyday Speyside dram, a collectible vintage, or a long-aged treasure, Glen Grant offers a consistently high-quality whisky that has stood the test of nearly two centuries.
