Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. is one of the most celebrated names in American bourbon, representing both historical significance and uncompromising craftsmanship. Produced by Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, the E.H. Taylor range pays tribute to Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr., a pioneering 19th-century distiller whose influence helped shape modern bourbon production.

Born in 1830, Taylor was a central figure in the bourbon industry’s move towards quality and consistency. He championed the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, legislation that set strict standards for American whiskey production, requiring it to be the product of one distillation season, from one distiller, aged at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% ABV). Many of today’s E.H. Taylor expressions proudly carry the Bottled-in-Bond designation in honour of his legacy.

E.H. Taylor bourbons are made using Buffalo Trace’s high-rye mash bill, which lends a spicier profile compared to wheated bourbons. They are aged in the distillery’s historic brick and limestone warehouses, which Taylor himself helped design. These warehouses regulate temperature and humidity naturally, contributing to a slow, steady maturation that develops depth and complexity in the spirit.

Flavour-wise, E.H. Taylor bourbons typically show a balance of sweetness, spice, and oak. The nose often features caramel, honey, and toasted oak, with hints of dried fruit and pepper. On the palate, expect layers of butterscotch, cinnamon, orange peel, and rich vanilla, leading to a warming, lingering finish. The rye whiskey in the range delivers a bolder spice profile, with mint, clove, and herbal depth.

Collectors prize E.H. Taylor for its combination of heritage, quality, and scarcity. While the Small Batch expression is relatively accessible, many of the single barrel and limited-edition releases are allocated and can be difficult to find, making them valuable to both drinkers and investors.
