Clase Azul is one of Mexico’s most prestigious tequila and mezcal producers, celebrated for its ultra-premium spirits, artisanal craftsmanship, and iconic hand-painted ceramic decanters. Founded in 1997 by Arturo Lomelí in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Clase Azul has grown from a small local project into a global luxury brand recognised for both its exceptional liquid and its artistry.

Origins and Philosophy

The name “Clase Azul” means “Blue Class,” a nod to the Blue Weber agave used to craft its tequila and to the refined, elevated experience the brand aims to deliver. From the start, Lomelí’s vision was to produce tequila that honoured Mexican tradition while presenting it in a way that reflected artistry, heritage, and luxury.

The company is based in Santa María Canchesda, a small village in the state of México, where local artisans handcraft and paint each decanter, making every bottle unique. The decanters themselves have become collector’s items, often retained long after the tequila has been enjoyed.

Production

Clase Azul tequilas are made from 100% Blue Weber agave grown in the highlands (Los Altos) of Jalisco, where the mineral-rich red volcanic soil and cooler climate produce agave with higher sugar content and distinctive floral sweetness. The agave is slow-cooked for around 72 hours in traditional stone ovens, then milled to extract the juice.

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks using a proprietary yeast strain, followed by double distillation in copper stills for purity and flavour concentration. Maturation is carried out in fine oak barrels, with time in cask varying by expression.

The brand also produces mezcal under the Clase Azul Mezcal label, crafted from wild agave varietals in Oaxaca and Guerrero, further expanding its representation of Mexican spirit traditions.

Cultural Impact and Collectability

Clase Azul’s decanters have become a symbol of luxury and Mexican artistry. Each is shaped, painted, and decorated by hand, taking up to two weeks to complete, and no two are identical. Collectors seek both the rare limited editions and the flagship designs, making them as much art pieces as spirit bottles.
