About Tobermory

Tobermory is one of Scotland’s most picturesque distilleries, perched on the colourful waterfront of Tobermory village on the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. Founded in 1798 under the name Ledaig Distillery, it has a long and varied history marked by periods of closure, ownership changes, and revival. Today, Tobermory produces both unpeated single malt under the Tobermory name and heavily peated spirit under the historic Ledaig label, offering two distinct styles from one set of stills.

The distillery’s location on Mull gives it access to pure, soft water drawn from a private loch in the hills above the site. This water, combined with Scottish barley and traditional copper pot stills, forms the backbone of Tobermory’s production. The stills are tall with narrow necks, producing a light, fruity spirit that works beautifully in a variety of cask types.

Tobermory’s unpeated single malt is known for its vibrant, coastal character with a backbone of orchard fruit and citrus. Maturation takes place in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels, sherry casks, and occasionally more experimental finishes, allowing the natural spirit character to shine while layering in sweetness, spice, and depth.

Under the Ledaig name, the distillery produces a heavily peated whisky at around 35–40 PPM, giving smoky, earthy, and maritime flavours balanced by sweet malt. This style traces its heritage back to the distillery’s early days, when peat was the island’s primary fuel source. Ledaig expressions include the core 10 Year Old, a 18 Year Old sherry-matured edition, and various single cask bottlings.

Flavour-wise, Tobermory’s unpeated malts often show bright citrus, apple, and pear, underpinned by malt sweetness and a salty coastal note, while Ledaig releases add bonfire smoke, seaweed, and peppery spice to the mix. The maritime climate of Mull, with its cool, damp air and proximity to the Atlantic, plays a significant role in shaping maturation, lending a subtle briny edge to both styles.

The distillery underwent an extensive refurbishment between 2017 and 2019, modernising equipment while retaining traditional methods. This investment has secured Tobermory’s place as one of Scotland’s most distinctive island producers, capable of offering whisky lovers a choice between elegant, unpeated island malt and robust, smoky Islay-style spirit.

Our Tobermory selection includes both the bright, fruit-driven Tobermory malts and the smoky, coastal Ledaig bottlings, alongside limited editions and cask strength releases. Whether you prefer the refined charm of an unpeated island whisky or the full-bodied punch of peat smoke, Tobermory offers a rare dual personality, two very different styles, united by island heritage and crafted with care on the shores of Mull.
