About Nikka

Nikka is one of Japan’s most iconic whisky producers, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, widely regarded as the father of Japanese whisky. Taketsuru’s journey began when he travelled to Scotland in 1918 to study organic chemistry at the University of Glasgow and learn the art of Scotch whisky-making firsthand. After apprenticing at distilleries in Speyside and Campbeltown, he returned to Japan with a deep understanding of traditional methods, which he fused with Japanese precision and craftsmanship to create a uniquely refined style of whisky.

Nikka operates two main distilleries, each producing a distinct character of spirit:
• Yoichi Distillery (Hokkaido) - Founded in 1934, Yoichi was chosen for its climate and coastal environment, reminiscent of Scotland. Known for its robust, smoky style, Yoichi uses direct coal-fired stills - a rare and traditional technique - along with worm tub condensers to create a rich, full-bodied whisky with subtle maritime salinity.
• Miyagikyo Distillery (Sendai) - Established in 1969, Miyagikyo produces a softer, more delicate spirit. Situated in a lush valley surrounded by mountains, it benefits from pure water sources and a cooler climate. The distillery uses steam-heated pot stills and a variety of cask types to create elegant, fruit-forward whiskies with floral and spicy notes.

Maturation takes place in a mix of American oak ex-bourbon barrels, sherry butts, and refill casks, along with occasional wine and exotic wood finishes. This diversity of casks allows Nikka to create whiskies with layers of complexity, from rich dried fruits and dark chocolate to bright citrus, vanilla, and subtle spice.

Flavour profiles vary widely depending on the distillery and expression. Yoichi bottlings lean towards peat smoke, brine, and robust malt, while Miyagikyo showcases pear, apple, and floral elegance. Blends like From the Barrel combine the strengths of both, offering a full-flavoured yet balanced experience.

Nikka’s influence on the Japanese whisky industry is immense. Its commitment to quality, traditional production methods, and regional expression has helped elevate Japanese whisky to global acclaim. Many of its bottlings have won prestigious international awards, further cementing its reputation among enthusiasts and collectors.

Our Nikka selection includes everything from approachable blends to rare, age-statement single malts. Whether you’re seeking the maritime punch of Yoichi, the graceful fruitiness of Miyagikyo, or the layered complexity of Nikka’s masterful blends, each bottle carries the legacy of Masataka Taketsuru, a fusion of Scottish tradition and Japanese artistry that continues to inspire whisky lovers around the world.
