Courvoisier Mizunara Cognac 2023 Edition

Celebrated Cognac house Courvoisier has teamed up with Suntory’s chief blender Shinji Fukuyo to create this delicate, really rather unusual Cognac. Its own chief blender Thibaut Hontanx looked to Japanese Mizunara oak to age a blend of Grand Champagne, Petite Champagne and Borderies eaux de vie. The bottle design depicts a Mizunara tree winding its way around the glass. Just 500 bottles were released. 

Palate: Delicate tropical fruits, chocolate, honey, exotic flowers and jasmine. Intense notes of sandalwood, dried fruits, cinnamon and blond tobacco.

Finish: Smooth and mellow with vanilla, roasted cocoa and peppery aromas on the palate, deliver great complexity. A mouthfeel with a long-lasting finish of soft tannins and exotic Sweetness.

About Courvoisier

Courvoisier is one of the world’s most famous Cognac houses, celebrated for its elegance, finesse, and association with moments of grandeur, from the courts of 19th-century France to modern celebrations across the globe. Founded in 1809 by Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois in the Paris suburb of Bercy, the brand originally traded in fine wines and spirits before focusing exclusively on Cognac. By the mid-1800s, Courvoisier had moved its operations to Jarnac, in the heart of the Charente region, where it remains to this day.

Courvoisier rose to prominence partly due to its association with Napoleon Bonaparte. Legend has it that Napoleon took several barrels of Courvoisier with him into exile on Saint Helena, earning it the enduring nickname “The Cognac of Napoleon.” In 1869, Napoleon III officially granted Courvoisier the title of “Official Supplier to the Imperial Court of France,” further cementing its prestige.

Unlike some Cognac houses, Courvoisier does not own vast estates of vineyards. Instead, it works closely with a network of over 800 local winegrowers and distillers, sourcing eaux-de-vie primarily from the Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, and Fins Bois crus. This collaborative approach allows Courvoisier to maintain a consistent house style while drawing on the unique qualities of each terroir.

Distillation is done in traditional Charentais copper pot stills, with the second distillation (bonne chauffe) carefully controlled to capture only the purest heart of the spirit. Courvoisier’s distillation process emphasises preserving delicate floral and fruity aromas, which form the foundation of its signature elegance.

Maturation takes place in French oak barrels, predominantly from the Tronçais and Limousin forests. These casks, with their fine and medium grain, gradually impart vanilla, spice, and toasty notes to the spirit. The ageing process is overseen by Courvoisier’s Master Blender, who blends eaux-de-vie of different ages and crus to achieve the desired balance.

Flavour-wise, Courvoisier is known for its floral delicacy, bright fruit, and silky texture, setting it apart from the heavier, more oak-driven styles of some competitors. This makes it versatile — enjoyable neat, over ice, or in classic Cognac cocktails such as the Sidecar or French Connection.
