With the help of Cristiano van Zeller, they were able to unearth these prized, ancient oak casks of Tawny Ports which make up The Last Drop "Centenario" Duo.
The 11th release is comprised of two very old Tawny Ports which offer a rare opportunity to sample two dramatically different examples of liquid set 100 years apart. The 1870 bottle was made from grapes on pre-Phyllorexa vines and the 1970 bottling come from vines grafted onto American root stock after the louse wiped out huge numbers of Europe's vineyards.
NEAL MARTIN’S TASTING NOTES Clove, toffee, wild fennel and smoke aromas. The palate is sweet and crisp on the entry with a tang of Seville orange marmalade and quince. There is great tension here thanks to the fine seam of acidity with a fresh, almost “zippy” finish that belies its age. A fine Colheita Tawny. 93 Points.
JANCIS ROBINSON’S TASTING NOTES Pale gingery tawny with a yellow-green rim – much paler than the 1870. Rich butteriness comes out from underneath on the nose. Then, on the palate, very satisfying richness overlaid with citrus peel and some refreshing acidity on the finish. It’s certainly a feat for a tawny port to give so much pleasure at nearly 50 years old. Much richer and more concentrated than the average tawny sold as a 30-year old. Well chosen! 17.5/20.

The Last Drop Distillers is a London-based luxury spirits company specialising in sourcing, bottling, and releasing some of the rarest and most exceptional aged spirits in the world. Founded in 2008 by industry veterans Tom Jago and James Espey, both of whom played pivotal roles in creating brands like Johnnie Walker Blue Label and Chivas Regal 18, The Last Drop was born from a desire to find extraordinary, forgotten casks and share them in extremely limited quantities.
The company’s philosophy is simple yet uncompromising: seek out only the finest, most characterful aged spirits, bottle them at their peak, and release them in tiny numbers. This approach means that each bottling is unique, once it’s gone, it’s gone forever, and represents an unrepeatable moment in the history of the spirit’s maturation..
Each spirit is chosen after extensive tasting and evaluation by The Last Drop’s tasting panel, which has included some of the most respected palates in the industry. Casks are often found in distillery warehouses, family cellars, or private collections — sometimes having sat undisturbed for 40, 50, or even 70 years.
Once a spirit is selected, it is bottled at natural cask strength and colour, without chill-filtration, to preserve its authentic character. Presentation is an important part of The Last Drop experience: each release comes in a hand-finished leather case with a certificate of authenticity, an information booklet, and a miniature bottle so the owner can taste the spirit without opening the full-sized one.
Flavour profiles are as varied as the sources, but all share the hallmark of exceptional maturity, concentration, and complexity. The long ageing process often brings layers of dried fruit, polished wood, exotic spice, and lingering sweetness, while retaining remarkable vibrancy for their age.
