Ρόσλιν
(0 προϊόντα)Roslin Distillers is a young name in the Scotch whisky world, yet its roots run deep in the Highland landscape and in a family with generations of distilling expertise. Founded in 2020 by Alex ‘(Colin’) W. Ross and his son, Aaron A. R. Ross, the company was born not from commercial ambition but from a desire to honour a lifetime devoted to whisky. From its base in Lochaber, Roslin Distillers continues a story defined by craft, heritage, and heartfelt connection to both place and family.
A story built on heritage
The story of Roslin Distillers began with a simple administrative step – registering the trademark “Allt A’Mhullin.” But it quickly evolved into something far more personal. After more than five decades in the whisky industry, Colin Ross, long-serving managing director of a Highland distillery, retired in 2019. Yet retirement did little to dim his passion for whisky. Together with his son Aaron, he set out to bottle a selection of private family casks, bringing them to life under their own label.
The name Roslin itself carries deep personal meaning. Formed from the first part of ‘Rosie’ (Colin’s wife) and the second part of ‘Colin’, it had also been the name of the family home since 1983. When Colin passed away in 2021, the name took on even greater significance – a tribute to his life’s work and a reminder of the family spirit that lies at the heart of the business.
A first bottling to remember
The inaugural whisky under the Allt A’Mhullin name was a 15-year-old single malt – a spirit that encapsulated both craft and sentiment. Matured through a journey of casks – from refill bourbon to refill sherry, and finally into port – it offered depth and complexity shaped by years of careful re-racking. Colin had personally overseen this cask’s maturation, making it fitting that this bottling became his final creation.
Only a limited number of bottles were produced, each bearing Colin’s signature on the back label. That same signature now graces the front of every Roslin bottling, a lasting reminder of his hand and heart in the whisky. The first edition sold out within weeks, though one bottle – the very first – was opened to toast his memory at his funeral and has since accompanied Aaron to tastings and events. As a close friend remarked, “as long as you keep doing what you are doing, his spirit lives on.” It’s a sentiment that continues to guide the distillery’s path forward.
The Highland connection
Roslin Distillers is based in Lochaber, a region that defines much of what makes Highland whisky distinctive – rugged beauty, pure water, and a sense of enduring place. The family has called this part of the West Highlands home since the early 1980s, apart from a brief period when Colin managed Laphroaig Distillery on Islay. Aaron, having returned permanently to Lochaber in 2016, speaks fondly of rediscovering the region’s dramatic scenery and its quiet influence on the whiskies crafted there.
The Roslin emblem
The distillery’s logo – a Highland cow framed within a cask end – captures both regional identity and family history. Colin first brought Highland cattle to the fields beside the distillery as a draw for visitors, and their hardy, characterful nature felt emblematic of Highland life. When designing the logo, Colin insisted that the cow’s horns should be straight, not curled, to reflect the bulls that had first grazed there. Today, that straight-horned Heilan Coo stands proudly as a symbol of Roslin’s story – rooted in the land, steeped in tradition, and unmistakably Scottish.
The Allt A’Mhullin spirit
Allt A’Mhullin, meaning “burn of the mill,” represents the pure Highland water and spirit that flow through the brand’s whiskies. Each bottling reflects the family’s hands-on approach to maturation and selection, focusing on single cask expressions that showcase individuality and balance rather than volume or trend. Every bottle carries the weight of experience, patience, and pride.
Though still in its early years, Roslin Distillers embodies a rare blend of continuity and renewal – a new chapter for a family whose life has been shaped by Scotch whisky. Its story is not one of scale or marketing, but of legacy and love for the craft.
As the Ross family continue to bottle under the Allt A’Mhullin name, each release serves as both a tribute to Colin’s enduring influence and a celebration of Highland whisky at its most personal.
Whisky, after all, is in the blood.
