Isle of Raasay Single Malt comes from one of Scotland’s youngest and most distinctive distilleries, located on the rugged Isle of Raasay, just off the east coast of Skye in the Inner Hebrides. Founded in 2014 by Alasdair Day and Bill Dobbie, the Isle of Raasay Distillery began production in 2017 with a vision to create a whisky that reflects the island’s unique geology, climate, and character. The first core single malt was released in 2021 to critical acclaim, signalling the arrival of a new voice in Scotch whisky.

The island itself is just 14 miles long and 3 miles wide, yet it boasts a remarkable diversity of terrain, from volcanic rock formations to lush moorland, which plays into the distillery’s sense of place. Water is drawn from a Celtic well deep beneath the distillery, naturally filtered through the island’s ancient basalt and sandstone, imparting mineral character to the new make spirit.

Raasay’s production style is distinctive. The distillery makes both peated and unpeated spirit, maturing them separately before marrying them together in carefully balanced proportions. This creates a whisky where gentle smoke complements, rather than dominates, the fruit-forward core.

All whiskies are bottled natural colour, non-chill filtered, and at 46.4% ABV, preserving their full texture and flavour integrity.

The core Isle of Raasay Single Malt offers aromas of red berries, heather honey, and light smoke, leading to a palate of dark fruit, salted caramel, baking spice, and maritime salinity, with a lingering, balanced finish. Alongside this, the distillery produces cask strength bottlings and single cask releases, each highlighting different facets of the spirit and cask combinations.

Beyond whisky, Isle of Raasay has become known for its Isle of Raasay Gin, a local favourite distilled with ten botanicals, including Raasay juniper, rhubarb root, and sweet orange peel, and infused with triple-distilled Raasay spirit for a smooth yet characterful profile.

The distillery is also a major draw for visitors. With six luxury bedrooms on site, a well-stocked whisky bar, and panoramic views over to Skye’s Cuillin mountains, it offers one of Scotland’s most immersive whisky tourism experiences. Sustainability is a key focus, with renewable energy initiatives and a commitment to supporting the island community.
