Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey

Jack Daniel’s is one of the most recognisable whiskey brands in the world, an American icon that has been made in the small town of Lynchburg, Tennessee, since 1866. Founded by Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel, the distillery is officially registered as the oldest in the United States. Despite its global fame, Jack Daniel’s production remains rooted in traditional methods that have changed little over more than 150 years.

Although often grouped with bourbon, Jack Daniel’s is technically a Tennessee whiskey, a category defined by the use of the Lincoln County Process. After distillation, the new make spirit is slowly filtered through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal before being filled into barrels. This charcoal mellowing step softens the spirit, removing some harsher compounds and adding subtle sweetness, giving Jack Daniel’s its signature smooth character.

The mash bill for Jack Daniel’s consists of 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye, a recipe that produces a rich, slightly sweet base with a gentle spice undertone. Distillation takes place in copper stills before the spirit undergoes the charcoal filtration and is matured in new, charred American white oak barrels. Barrels are made to the brand’s specifications at its own cooperage, ensuring quality and consistency.

The whiskey matures in Lynchburg’s barrelhouses, where Tennessee’s hot summers and cold winters encourage interaction between the spirit and oak, drawing deep colour and flavour into the whiskey. Jack Daniel’s does not use age statements; instead, master distillers decide when each barrel is ready by taste, colour, and aroma.

Limited editions such as Sinatra Select, Bonded, and various heritage bottlings explore higher proofs, unique cask selections, and historical recipes, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts.

Flavour-wise, Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 is known for its approachability and balance, vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak lead on the nose, with a palate of sweet corn, soft spice, and gentle char, finishing smooth and slightly dry. The Single Barrel releases amplify these notes with added intensity, while Gentleman Jack’s double mellowing delivers a creamier, silkier texture.
