Crabbie is one of the most historic names in Scotch whisky, with roots going back to 1801 in Edinburgh, and a reputation that bridges the golden age of 19th-century blending with the dynamic craft spirit movement of today. Founded by John Crabbie, the original company was a pioneer in sourcing, maturing, and blending high-quality Scotch whiskies, exporting them around the world at a time when Scotch was beginning to rival brandy as the gentleman’s drink of choice.

Over two centuries later, the name has been revived by Halewood Artisanal Spirits, bringing it back into the whisky spotlight with a focus on both heritage and innovation. This rebirth includes building new distilling facilities in Edinburgh, sourcing exceptional casks from across Scotland, and bottling whiskies that range from everyday drams to rare single casks.

Heritage and Revival

John Crabbie was a key figure in the establishment of Scotch whisky as a global product. In the 19th century, he built a network of supply relationships with leading Highland and Speyside distilleries, transporting whisky to Edinburgh for maturation in his own bonded warehouses. As the industry consolidated in the 20th century, Crabbie’s whisky bottlings disappeared from the shelves, and the brand became better known for its famous ginger wine.

The 21st-century revival began in earnest in the late 2010s, with the launch of the Chain Pier Distillery in 2018, the first new distillery in Edinburgh in almost a century, followed by the opening of the larger Bonnington Distillery in 2021. These sites mark a return to whisky production within the city’s historic port district of Leith, once a major hub for blending and bottling.

Flavour Profile

While the taste varies across releases, Crabbie whiskies tend to balance malt sweetness with oak spice, often accented by dried fruit from sherry cask maturation. Expect approachable but characterful drams that suit both neat drinking and creative serves.

A Modern Edinburgh Whisky Story

Today, Crabbie combines the prestige of a historic brand with the creative energy of a modern producer. Its whiskies appeal to collectors seeking rare bottlings, enthusiasts exploring independent releases, and newcomers looking for smooth, high-quality Scotch at an accessible price point.

Our Crabbie range includes blended whiskies, youthful single malts, and rare aged expressions. Whether you’re raising a glass to Edinburgh’s whisky past or toasting its future, Crabbie offers a dram that’s steeped in history yet firmly at home in the modern whisky world.
