The brand was first created in 1999 by Laurie Barnard, then Chairman of St. Lucia Distillers. His aim was to showcase the island’s rum-making potential through a blended style that combined the best of both worlds: the robust, full-bodied character of traditional pot still rum with the smoothness and approachability of modern column still distillate. The result was a versatile, flavourful spirit that quickly became a benchmark for Saint Lucian rum.

St. Lucia Distillers produces Chairman’s Reserve entirely on the island, drawing on molasses sourced from Caribbean suppliers. Fermentation is carried out using proprietary yeast strains, with some batches undergoing extended fermentation to encourage the development of complex esters. The distillery operates a variety of still types, including a John Dore pot still for rich, aromatic spirit and a continuous column still for lighter, cleaner distillate.

The heart of Chairman’s Reserve lies in its blending and ageing process. Different rums are matured separately in ex-bourbon American oak barrels, some for as little as 5 years, others significantly longer, before being expertly married to create the final profile. The tropical climate of Saint Lucia accelerates maturation, imparting deeper colour and flavour in a shorter period than would be possible in cooler climates.

In flavour terms, Chairman’s Reserve is often described as rich yet balanced. Expect aromas of dried fruit, caramelised sugar, and oak spice, followed by layers of toffee, banana, citrus peel, and baking spice on the palate. The pot still component contributes weight, tropical fruit, and molasses depth, while the column still spirit brings lift, smoothness, and structure.

Highly versatile, Chairman’s Reserve is equally at home sipped neat, over ice, or in classic cocktails such as the Mai Tai, Rum Old Fashioned, or Daiquiri. The Spiced variant lends itself well to long drinks with ginger beer or cola, while the older expressions reward slow, contemplative sipping.
