Auchentoshan
(0 produkter)Auchentoshan is one of Scotland’s most distinctive single malt Scotch whisky distilleries, celebrated for its unique triple distillation process and smooth, approachable Lowland style. Situated just outside Glasgow, near the banks of the River Clyde, Auchentoshan (pronounced “Ock-en-tosh-an”) translates from Gaelic as “corner of the field,” a nod to its rural origins despite its proximity to the city.
Founded in 1823, Auchentoshan has operated for two centuries, making it one of the Lowlands’ most enduring whisky producers. Over the years, the distillery has survived economic downturns, wartime bombing (which destroyed much of the site in 1941), and changes in ownership, always staying true to its hallmark production methods. Today, it is owned by Beam Suntory and remains one of the few remaining Lowland distilleries still producing at scale.
The defining feature of Auchentoshan is its triple distillation, a technique more commonly associated with Irish whiskey. Most Scotch single malts are distilled twice, but Auchentoshan runs its spirit through three copper pot stills, resulting in a lighter, more delicate whisky with a higher alcohol strength (around 81% ABV before cask filling). This extra distillation removes more heavier congeners, creating a cleaner spirit that allows subtle flavours from both the malt and the cask to shine through.
Maturation takes place in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels, oloroso sherry casks, and occasionally wine barriques, allowing the distillery to produce a variety of flavour profiles. Auchentoshan’s light and citrusy new make spirit is particularly receptive to cask influence, making it ideal for experimenting with finishes.
Flavour-wise, Auchentoshan single malts are typically light-bodied, smooth, and fruity, often with notes of fresh citrus, orchard fruits, sweet malt, and gentle nuttiness. Sherry cask expressions add richer tones of dried fruit, spice, and toffee, while bourbon cask maturation highlights vanilla, coconut, and honey. The triple distillation process ensures that even higher-strength releases remain exceptionally smooth and approachable.
Auchentoshan’s style makes it an excellent “gateway” single malt for those new to Scotch whisky, while its cask finishes and older expressions appeal to seasoned drinkers looking for something different from the heavier Highland or Islay malts. Its versatility also makes it a favourite among bartenders for use in highballs and whisky-based cocktails, as its clean profile mixes well without overpowering other ingredients.
Our Auchentoshan selection features the core range alongside special editions and cask finishes, offering whisky lovers a chance to explore the full spectrum of Lowland single malt character. Whether enjoyed neat, with a splash of water, or in a refreshing cocktail, Auchentoshan delivers a distinctive combination of tradition, innovation, and smooth drinkability that has made it a Lowland icon for over 200 years.
