Daftmill Winter Batch Release 2010 (bottled 2023)

Lowland farm distillery Daftmill is known for its highly sought-after expressions. The Cuthbert family only distils during quiet periods, meaning just 100 casks a year are typically laid down. The rest of the time farmer Francis manages the estate, growing the barley used in production. For this 2010 expression, he chose the Publican barley variety. He can tell you exactly which field it came from and when it was harvested. After being cut on 28 and 29 August 2009, the barley was dried and malted during summer 2010. Post-distillation, 25 first-fill ex-bourbon barrels were filled in November and December that same year. They matured in a dunnage warehouse until being bottled in 2023 – and now we have a small allocation to share.

Tasting notes from Daftmill: 

Nose: very classical Daftmill with distillery character front and centre. A lot of freshly mown grass, green herbs, crushed nettles and plenty of typical yellow and green fruits. Also some flowers and their pollens.

Palate: a good balance of sweetness with fruits, citrus curds and custard, along with slightly drier tones of fruit teas, chamomile and linseed oil. A very easy and sippable profile.

Finish: medium in length, with a good balance of sweetness and dryness and elegant floral notes.
